The player's transfer to Roma is a provisional agreement until FIFA decide his fate.

During today's unveiling of Jakub Błaszczykowski, questions from the press turned to the Mohamed Salah issue that has once again reared it's ugly head. After a drawn out saga that Fiorentina fans would rather forget, (and by the looks of this, Chelsea fans would too) Salah joined AS Roma at the beginning of the season.

In his press conference last week, Sporting Director Daniele Pradè confirmed that the matter was now in the hands of FIFA - a sentiment that was reiterated by Rogg today. According to the Fiorentina officials, Salah's transfer to Roma is a provisional one, expiring in December. At this point FIFA will decide either in favour of Fiorentina or the player. If the committee do rule against Salah, he could face a ban and in addition there may be some compensation due to the viola.

It was Pradè though that epitomized the feeling of shock in Florence when it became clear that Salah was not going to play for Fiorentina this season:

"Nobody could have imagined what the player had in mind during his six months in Florence".

If you strip down all the hysteria surrounding this issue, Pradè has actually hit the nail on the head. It may be hard to think about now, but Salah played for Fiorentina as though he was having the time of his life. The way he celebrated with fans after the emphatic 3-0 Coppa Italia victory against Roma only serves as a reminder that he fooled us all.

The kicker? It's a loan-to-buy-deal

The torment of the summer appears to have finally drawn to a close today, as Mohamed Salah was unveiled as a new AS Roma player today via Roma twitter. Chelsea confirmed the move shortly after on their website.

Here is the official Chelsea statement:

Chelsea Football Club has agreed terms with AS Roma for the season-long loan of Mohamed Salah. The winger will spend the 2015/16 campaign on loan at the Stadio Olimpico and the agreement includes an option to purchase at any point during the season.

Salah arrived at Chelsea in January 2014, becoming the first Egyptian to play for the club. He scored twice in 19 appearances for the Blues before joining Fiorentina on loan in February, where he scored nine times in 26 games last season.

Of course, from the Fiorentina perspective the kicker (to the groin) is that Roma have gotten Salah on loan. The Viola weren't outspent in trying to make a deal, Salah didn't want to play in Florence. It's been 99% the player and his agent making this happen. We now know that Salah led the Fiorentina club management on a merry game of "ignore the phone call" behind Chelsea's back until well after the pre-set deadline to renew the loan, then scampered away in loud and frankly unkind fashion to a Champions League club that the Viola beat 3-0 in their most recent encounter.

From the Chelsea perspective, they are getting reasonably well remunerated in this deal, as Di Marzio reports that they will €5 million for the season-long loan, with a tentative outright purchase price set at €15 million, and I am sure that our friends over at We Ain't Got No History will just be glad to be done with the whole affair.

There has been extensive talk that the Viola will pursue legal action against this move since Salah never formally rejected the Fiorentina loan renewal, but so far that's only been talk, and this one looks pretty done and dusted; I for one will be the first to say "thank goodness." I am reasonably certain that if Salah plays in Florence when Roma roll into town, the whistles will be absolutely deafening, and it is hard to argue that he hasn't earned them.

If "Momo" had handled things a bit more transparently, maybe we could just fondly remember his absolutely amazing goals against Juventus and Inter, but as is, it's kind of gross that Salah and his agent are getting exactly what they wanted by behaving badly. Well, the whole thing has been kind of gross. Thankfully it's over. Onwards and upwards.

But what will Fiorentina have to say about this latest development after having asserted to Chelsea that the player must not move to another Serie A club?

The curious case of Mohamed Salah just refuses to die down this summer. The Egyptian forward is due to land in Rome today for talks with AS Roma after a move from parent club Chelsea had been agreed for a fee of around €23 million . Fiorentina, however, have continued to assert that they have a valid contract with the player since they paid the €1 million extension fee to extend the loan for the duration of the coming season.

The player and his attention seeking agent Ramy Abbas have tweeted less than discreet hints that a move to the giallorossi is on the cards but Fiorentina are unwilling to let this happen without a fight.

According to Gazzetta, in order for Fiorentina to relinquish any legal claim should the transfer to Roma go through, they require a compensation payment from Chelsea of €5 million. Director general Andrea Rogg has clearly stated the position of the gigliati:

"As far as we are concerned, Salah is a player that has a contract with Fiorentina. We are talking with Chelsea, not Roma - without a contract he will not be able to play"

Ex-deputy of the FIGC, lawyer Mario Stagliano has weighed in on the argument in an interview with il tempo, stating that even if FIFA were to approve the transfer to Rome; if the FIGC were to find two separate contracts signed by Salah, he could face up to a six month ban. There are risks for Fiorentina, however as any ruling that goes against them could see them excluded from cup competitions by FIFA.

The focus now seems very much on financial compensation from Chelsea, and any mention of the English club sending a player on loan by way of recompense or talk of Mattia Destro arriving from Roma have quietened. It is to be hoped that Fiorentina do have sound backup for taking such a firm legal stance on the matter and that the situation can be resolved sooner rather than later so that we can stop wasting our breath on a player who has such little regard for the club that we love.

The latest installment in the saga hypothesizes the arrival of Destro from Roma to sweeten the pill of the giallorossi acquiring the services of our favourite Egyptian

Market expert Gianluca DiMarzio has reported that AS Roma are stepping up their interest in ex-viola loanee Mohamed Salah. Walter Sabatini, Sporting Director of the giallorossi has today visited the London club in order to commence negotiations.

The Egyptian comes with some significant baggage, obviously, and the most difficult part of the agreement will undoubtedly be how to pacify Fiorentina, who despite having paid Chelsea for his season-long loan extension for next season were told in no uncertain terms by the players agent that he would not return to Florence.

The viola have already threatened the player and Inter with a legal battle; Inter because they were allegedly aggressive in their pursuit of Salah. Fiorentina have also publicly stated in discussions with Chelsea that they do not want Salah to play in Serie A next season.

Chelsea themselves have been looking to resolve the situation by compensating the Gigliati financially or even offering a player on loan by way of recompense. Roma, meanwhile, are gambling that they have something better to offer since Fiorentina have already enquired about their out-of-favour striker Mattia Destro.

If Chelsea have something to offer in addition - one would assume that this would be at the very least the return of the €1 million already paid for the loan - there could yet be a resolution to the saga without messy legal action. This would all depend on how determined Fiorentina are to see Salah play outside of Serie A next season.

Who would be a good fit?

The Mohammed Salah soap opera has quieted but is ongoing, although it appears the drama has not hurt relationships between Fiorentina and Chelsea, who seem willing to accommodate their Viola friends by potentially offering another player on loan, a thing which becomes possible when you are owned by an oligach and have a talent surplus.

Today Viola News has given us an overview of some of the names that Fiorentina may be looking at under the amusing title "Fishing in Lake Chelsea". Based on my own extremely superficial scouting of these players, I will give an overview over whether or not they could potentially be a good fit for Fiorentina.

It is important to acknowledge none of these guys are nearly as talented as Salah. They maybe aren't as full of themselves too.

Dominic Solanke (Striker, 17, England): An U-18 England international, Solanke is allegedly highly regarded by Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho - known for his love of big, physical strikers - but he faces heavy competition for opportunities to break into Chelsea's first team. Solanke is in many ways a traditional English forward, athletic and hard working, but he has the skill to also play as a winger or midfielder.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? Well, we could use another forward, but English players don't have a good track record in Serie A lately, even if many of us saw some untapped potential in Micah Richards last year. Besides that, while we could use the help, we have our own young forward starlet in Babacar (and Bernardeschi, hopefully), who has earned additional playing time from the start of the season.

Nathan Aké (Defender, 20, Netherlands): A product of the Feyenoord youth system, Aké is in many ways the prototypical Dutch "total football" utility player, a defensive minded player who can play anywhere in the back line or as a holding midfielder. He has previously been compared to Ruud Gullit, but since moving to Chelsea in 2012 he has stagnated. He spent last season on loan at Championship club Reading for a month to get more playing time, where he made 5 starts.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? Aké is exactly the kind of player we could use, a holding midfielder with technique who can hold his own physically, and his ability to play in the back line only increases his value. His lack of experience makes him a wild card for a starting role, but he'd be an ideal utility player.

Victor Moses (Winger, 24, Nigeria): A little older than the previous two, Moses is a high flying winger/forward and decent goal scorer who previously starred for Wigan before moving to Chelsea in 2012. After a few forgettable years for Chelsea and on loan at Liverpool, he had an excellent season for Stoke City last year under Mark Hughes. It is believed that Stoke wants to keep him, but Chelsea may have other plans.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? While Moses is another player who seems best suited for the EPL (notice his best seasons were for very English, kick and rush teams), he's a speedy player who could potentially fit Sousa's philosophy of rapid counter attacks from the flanks, and without Salah we are desperate for some more speed. Bonus points for the biblical puns that come with having a player names Moses.

Loïc Rémy (Forward, 28, France): One of the most established and experienced players on this list, Rémy is a French internatonal who can play both striker and winger who has bounced around England and France showing glimpses of brilliance without fully living up to is talent. His former manager at Newcastle, Alan Pardew, allegedly wants to bring him to Crystal Palace, but Chelsea might be interested in getting him out of England.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? Unlike most of these other names, Rémy is actually a proven goal scorer in both the Premier League and Ligue 1, and potentially would be an immediate starter for Fiorentina, either as a CF or in a supporting role. Of course as a result there is likely competition for Rémy, including by teams who are willing to pay for him on permanent transfer.

John Obi Mikel (Midfielder, 28, Nigeria): Nigerian wonderkid who transferred to Chelsea under controversial circumstances just before his 18th birthday, the central midfielder is in many ways a warning to promising talent who get bought by big clubs at too young an age. Although Mikel has had a successful career at Chelsea, making over 300 appearences since 2006 and winning every major trophy with them, he never developed offensively as expected, being forced into a more defensive role than suggested by the hype of his 2003 U-17 World Championships performance.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? Mikel gives Fiorentina a solid option for the holding midfielder role, which is where he has mainly played for the past few seasons. He appears to already be on the decline, but if we fail to get Walace or another target, Mikel would give us a physical option for the midfield without destroying the centre technically.

Lucas Piazon (Forward, 21, Brazil): Probably the cloest thing to a direct Salah replacement, Piazon is a forward/left winger who doesn't have the speed of a certain Egyptian but makes up for it with that textbook Brazilian skill and flair, leading to lazy Kaka comparisons when he, like many players on this list, moved to Chelsea from São Paulo for approximately £5m in 2012, only to stagnate ever since his move to Europe. He spent last season on a disappointing loan with Eintracht Frankfurt (alongside Fiorentina <strike>legend</strike> Haris Seferović), and has recently incurred the wrath of Chelsea fans by saying a return right now would be a "waste of time".

Would be be a good fit for Fiorentina? At this point Piazon could either be the next Salah for Fiorentina...or the next Andow. Unlike his countryman however, Piazon appears to be focused on his career more than the nightlife, and simply hasn't been given the opportunity to be a team's orchestrator.

Oriol Romeu (Midfielder, 23, Spain): A defensive midfielder who can also play CB, Romeu is a product of Barcelona's La Masia, with experience playing in the Premier League, La Liga, and the Bundesliga. Two injury plagued loan spells at Valencia and Stuttgart have slowed down his development, although when healthy he was the starting defensive midfielder for the latter last season.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? Fiorentina has certainly killed off the myth that Spaniards can't work in Italy, leading to a mini Spanish arms race between la Viola, Juventus, and Napoli. While comparisons to another bald Spanish midfielder who stalled his career by moving to England would be nice, it is unknown if Spaniard will feel as comfortable in Sousa's system as they did Montella's. While Romeu was relatively successful for a bad Suttgart team last year, I personally thought he was mediocre at best for Valencia in the 13/14 season. He doesn't do anthing exceptionally well, but he's a well rounded player who, despite my criticisms, would be an interesting option for the holding midfielder role.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Midfielder, 19, England): A 1.92m central midfielder compared with Chelsea teammate Nemanja Matić, Loftus-Cheek combines exceptional reach and anticipation with passing skills and a willingness to join the attack. A complete midfielder developing well deserved hype for his England U-21 performances, he nevertheless has already been criticized pubically by Jose Mourinho for not running enough. The English media has been reporting Fiorentina's interest in taking Loftus-Cheek on loan, so it is likely he would be one of the club's first choices.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? His lack of experience, especially outside of his home country, makes him a risk, but his upside is ridiculous, even if this is one player with virtually no chance of playing for Fiorentina beyond his loan. It might be worth it however, if he can adapt right away.

Patrick Bamford (Striker, 21, England): Another English forward, Bamford has spent the past two years on successful loan spells in the Championship for Derby County and Middlesborough. Bamford lacks the natural talent of some of these other players, but has been extremely effective at the Champioship level, and has shown the tactical ability to cut in when forced to play on the wing.

Would he be a good fit for Fiorentina? His success in the English second division, especially under former Mourinho assistant Aitor Karanka means the ability is there, but I'm skeptical he is a fit for Serie A.

Realistically, none of these players will likely replicate the "lightning in a bottle" effect of Salah. But considering how our transfer window has gone so far, perhaps another Chelsea castaway is our best option for midfield/forward depth.

The two clubs sit down to avoid FIFA arbitration, whilst Salah will apparently join Chelsea's pre-season

Reports are circulating to suggest that representatives from Chelsea and Fiorentina are working together to resolve the delicate situation involving Mohamed Salah. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the discussions between the two clubs are in an attempt to avoid resorting to FIFA arbitration. Both teams want to try to safeguard their friendly relationship, one that led to the favourable deal being set up for Salah in the first instance.

The sticking point remains the fact that Fiorentina believe Salah's power of veto for the deal was a private agreement and not part of the original contract signed by the Egyptian, and therefore is not recognised by Serie A. They also argue that Salah did not state that he did not want to continue with the loan until after the deadline had passed, and after Fiorentina had paid the required €1million to Chelsea in order to extend the loan. The Blues assert that the veto clause was part of the initial contract and is recognized by UEFA.

With Fiorentina threatening legal action, the most likely scenario is that Chelsea will end this whole sorry mess by offering the viola their €1million back, plus a compensation figure that reflects the raise in value of Salah during his successful six months with the club.

Chelsea may well be able to recoup this compensation through selling the player for a higher value than the set €18million deal offered to Fiorentina to buy Salah permanently at the end of the 2015-16 season. Although Inter have denied any improper approach for the 'hero to villain' forward, Inter general director Marco Fassone refused to rule out their interest in him. As it stands, Salah will commence pre-season training with Chelsea whilst the London club attempt to clean up all the mess that he left behind.

Inter respond to comments sent from an unverified Twitter account supposedly belonging to Paolo Panerai

The war of words over Mohamed Salah has been in full flow again today, with an outburst on Twitter supposedly sent from Fiorentina official Paolo Panerai. The account is an unverified one but seemed to provoke an immediate response from Inter, who issued an official club statement in response to the accusations.

Salah himself also broke his silence via Twitter, declaring in Arabic "I respect Fiorentina, but now I prefer not to talk" before adding in English "Thank you for appreciating me in such way

The tweets from Panerai read ""Dear Giovanni [Malago], Salah is the final straw. We can no longer tolerate that signatures and rules are worth less than zero.

"If football clubs were to respect transparency rules, then Inter would already have been relegated. Whose money is it being used, is it starting from the Cayman Islands?

"Michel Platini knows that Inter have broken the Uefa Fair Play rules. For Salah and other players who cost millions. This is the chance to make an example of them"

Inter's official statement is in direct response to these tweets and reads:

F.C. Internazionale announces that it has read with great astonishment the comments made by the Paolo Panerai on his personal Twitter account.

It is not acceptable for anybody to talk out of turn about our club, casting doubt over its solidity and transparency. It is not acceptable for anybody to offend our club and, as a consequence, our fans, with comments that are utterly lacking in foundation.

F.C. Internazionale is dismayed by the request for exemplary sporting action to be taken against the club, given that it and many other clubs has just signed a public agreement with UEFA to respect the FFP regulations.

Given that Fiorentina is clearly attempting to involve Inter in a matter that doesn't concern it, in order to cover up a problem between Fiorentina and the player Mohamed Salah, F.C. Internazionale will make recourse to any authority necessary in order to protect its image and integrity.

It has been a bad day for Inter's PR department as Gianelli Imbula's father had also accused them of sending threatening text messages when they learned of interest in the player from Porto in addition to their own.

There are still far more questions than answers in this sorry affair: Will Salah still end up at Inter after the club had been accused of making an illegal approach? What are Chelsea's thoughts on the situation? Will Fiorentina follow through with their legal action? Could Salah even end up at Fiorentina next season? Whatever happens, it is to be hoped that this issue will be concluded sooner rather than later.

But whilst the club do not want to be pushed around, there are pressing issues to be dealt with...like having some players for next season

Just when you thought the last episode of the Mohammed Salah telenovela had been aired, the powers that be at Fiorentina have decided to renew for another season. Today, Sky Sport Italia reporter Manuele Baiocchini broke the news via Twitter that Fiorentina had sent a formal letter to Inter, accusing them of contacting the player whilst still under contract with them.

It is interesting to note that Inter manager Roberto Mancini denied having called Salah - laughing it off by saying that he had no credit on his phone. It may not be so amusing for Inter once they receive Fiorentina's letter, as according to gazzeta.it, it invokes invokes Article 18, Paragraph 3 of the Regulation on the Status and Transfer of Players of the FIGC: "A club intending to conclude a contract with a professional must inform the club that owns the player in writing before embarking on negotiations with the professional in question. A professional is free to sign a contract with another club as long as the contract with his current club has expired or will expire within six months. Any violations of this rule will be punished with appropriate penalties "

It is not just Inter, though, that will face the wrath of the Della Valles. Salah himself has been summoned to the pre-season training camp at Moena on 13th July and has been threatened with legal action should he not do so.

Whilst it is accepted that Salah and his agent have behaved badly, it remains to be seen whether Fiorentina's current course of action will do the club any good in the long run. Although Salah has caused a lot of heartache, the drawn out saga is drawing attention away from the fact that much work is to be done to assemble a squad for the coming season.
