Steady progress is a good thing.

Andy Bangu (Bisceglie)

The 21-year-old Congolese midfielder continues to play significant minutes for the Nerazzurri Stellata; he’s played in all 10 matches since joining from the floundering Matera and started 9 of them. His arrival (along with Cerofolini and Mosti) has coincided with a big improvement for the Apulians, although it won’t be enough to prevent them from returning to Serie D after two scrappy seasons in the third tier. His playing time has tailed off a bit over the past few weeks, though, largely because he hasn’t been the player we (I) desperately want him to be. His drive from midfield has diminished considerably and his longstanding aversion to the defensive side of his job has become increasingly obvious. We still think there’s a tremendously talented player in there, but he just needs a bit of help to bloom.

Giuseppe Caso (Cuneo)

The 20-year-old winger continues to work the often-thankless task of attacking sub for the Aquile. He’s now up to 22 appearances (but just 6 starts) on the year, tallying a goal and an assist. His progress hasn’t exactly been meteoric, but he’s clearly earned the faith of manager Cristiano Scazzola as the Piedmontese outfit scraps to avoid the drop; not a lot of players on their first professional assignments can boast a similar achievement. We’d naturally like to see him produce a bit more on the stat sheet, but he’s still young. We also expect him to stick in the Viola books for awhile, as his agent Augusto Carpeggiani has strong ties to Fiorentina.

Michele Cerofolini (Bisceglie)

The 20-year-old goalkeeper has been in sterling form for Rodolfo Vanoli’s men of late. While he did make a serious mistake against Rende that probably should have resulted in a penalty, he has stopped a PK against Sicula Leonzio and made a string of really good saves, notably against Catanzaro and Juve Stabia. As we mentioned in Bangu’s blurb, his excellence hasn’t been enough to stave off the drop, but it’s worth mentioning that he’s kept a clean sheet in 6 of his 10 matches, which comprises 75% of the scoreless defensive outings from the Nerazzurri Stellata all year. He’s got quick reflexes and surprising strength, and has improved his judgement of high balls into the box. While he’s lost his starting spot with the Italy U20s to AC Milan’s Alessandro Plizzari of late, he should be back in the running for the U21s shortly. Our expectations for him remain very high because he looks like a heck of a prospect; it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him take over as the number two for Fiorentina next year, although management would probably rather get him regular minutes elsewhere.

Petko Hristov (Ternana)

The 20-year-old Bulgarian centerback has endured a rather rocky season with the Rossoverdi, in large part due to the injuries he’s suffered. Currently on the shelf with muscular problems, this is his third stint out of action due to ill health. Combined with his duties with Bulgaria U21s, he’s only made 14 appearances on the season, and just 2 since the new year. This is one of those circumstances, though, where the player’s underperformance really doesn’t seem to be on him at all. With a Viola contract that runs until 2022, we fully expect him loaned out elsewhere next season, and with considerable more success. He’s still an excellent young defender with every tool you want and should be ready for bigger things within two years.

Marco Marozzi (Fermana)

The 20-year-old midfielder has struggled with injuries in his first season away from the Primavera, but has finally begun settling into a groove over the past month and a half, making 6 straight appearances off the bench. His versatility—he’s played in midfield, out wide, and as a 10 this year—should serve him well. More important, though, is that he seems to have finally earned the trust of manager Flavio Destro as the Canarini push for an unlikely promotion to Serie B. We’re fascinated to see how Marozzi does in crunch time this year; he’s a sneaky good prospect who’s definitely worth monitoring.

Luca Mosti (Bisceglie)

The 20-year-old rightback made his first competitive appearance as a professional in the 2-1 loss to Sicula Leonzio in February, playing 32 minutes and earning himself a late booking. It’s a heck of an adjustment to go straight from the Primavera to the rough-and-tumble of Serie C, so we’re not too concerned about the young Tuscan. While his ceiling probably isn’t as high as some of the other Viola prospects, defenders generally take longer to develop than attackers or midfielders; if he continues growing, he should have a long career as a solid professional.

Pierluigi Pinto (Arezzo)

The 20-year-old centerback had been an ever-present member of a surprisingly good Amaranto defense—the 5th-best defensive record in the league has led them to 5th in the table and the thick of the promotion hunt—but suffered an injury in the 3-0 loss to Carrarese a month ago and has been out ever since. Despite the occasional lapses you expect from a youngster taking his first steps outside of the academy, he’s earned rave reviews from manager Alessandro dal Canto, who believes that the youngster is ready for a big role in Serie B. Yeah, we know that Serie B and Serie A are pretty far apart, but it may be time to bump Pinto up in our prospect rankings. Dude has been excellent and has risen to every challenge he’s faced this year.

Amidu Salifu (Arezzo)

The 26-year-old Ghanaian midfielder has mostly been stuck on the bench this year, making just 9 appearances and 3 starts. He’s never been the same since a succession of knee injuries sapped his explosiveness and confidence; it’s doubtful that the Amaranti will exercise their option to buy him at season’s end given his underwhelming stint at the Tuscan outfit, which means he’ll be back in Florence and looking for another loan deal next year. If rumors are to be believed, that means he could outlast Pantaleo Corvino, who originally signed him to the Primavera back in 2011. That’s a heck of an accomplishment in and of itself; we really hope he puts it together for a late-career surge, as you can’t help but root for the longest-tenured Fiorentina player.

Luca Zanon (Siena)

The 22-year-old leftback has been one of the pillars of Robur’s team this year, playing the 7th-most minutes of any outfield player in the squad. It’s not enough to give him a Fiorentina future, as his Viola deal expires this year, but he’s certainly done enough this year to secure a contract somewhere. After he spent a couple years in the wilderness, we’re just glad that he’s finally performing well at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, even if it’s the one in loathsome Siena. Whether the Tuscans keep him around or whether he opts to try his luck elsewhere, we think he’ll be alright.

It’s the Cheese and everyone else.

Serie A

Riccardo Saponara (Sampdoria)

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has had a very Cheese sort of season: he’s missed more than half of the games Samp have played, making just 5 appearances due to a hamstring injury. And in those 5 appearances, he’s scored twice and added an assist, including a masterclass against AC Milan two weeks ago.

He’s started the past 2 matches for the Blucerchiati, possibly supplanting Gastón Ramírez as the trequartista and key man in manager Marco Giampaolo’s 4-3-1-2, even as the side has slumped to a pair of tough defeats in those fixtures. If he can continue his current form, there’s no question that Samp are going to redeem him at season’s end for a below-market fee reported to be €7 million. Heck, if he can continue his current form, he could well earn a spot Roberto Mancini’s new-look Italy side. As ever with Saponara, it’s all about whether or not he can stay healthy, because his talent’s never been in question. If you’ll permit me some cynicism, another lengthy injury layoff could result in Samp sending him back to Florence, where he’s exactly the sort of player that’s utterly lacking in the side right now. But I desperately want him to stay safe and sound and reach the heights that he’s undeniably capable of reaching, whether that’s with the Viola or elsewhere.

Serie B

Jaime Báez (Cosenza)

The 23-year-old Uruguayan attacker is unexpectedly showing signs of life with the Lupi. He’s now made 3 appearances on the season, including his first start against Pescara last week (in which he should have won a penalty), and even got his debut goal with an unbelievably dramatic (and completely accidental) late equalizer at Carpi.

His contract doesn’t run out until 2020, but there’s almost no chance that Fiorentina will extend his contract past then. While it’s too late for him to save his future with the Viola, some good performances, or even just some steady performances, should be enough to earn him another chance in Italy, or elsewhere if he so desires. He’s still young and still has all the athletic gifts that a top-notch winger could want; it’d be great to see him blossom somewhere, even if it’s not Florence.

Gaetano Castrovilli (Cremonese)

The 21-year-old midfielder has endured a bit of a rough patch of late, stringing together some subpar performances for the Tigri. In fairness to him, he’s been played out of position on the wing rather than in the center of the pitch, where he’s clearly more comfortable. If the team’s form—winless in 5—doesn’t improve soon, manager Massimo Rastelli, faced with a disastrous run that’s seen his charges crash from 4th to 13th, may well make some changes to his side, and that could well involve Castrovilli getting some more run in his more natural spot. We’d be thrilled for the player if that happened, as we’re convinced that his future is in the middle, using his dazzlingly quick feet and fantastic appreciation of space to drive the action forward at every opportunity. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, even though it’s certainly not fair to saddle such a young player with these kinds of expectations: he’s the closest thing to Borja Valero currently on the books at Fiorentina and could provide a more creative option in the middle of the pitch as early as next year. Fingers crossed that his form bucks up a bit and that Pioli ropes him in for next season.

Michele Cerofolini (Cosenza)

The 19-year-old goalkeeper has finally gotten a couple of chances, although he’s clearly still second choice to Umberto Saracco. He was fine at Cremonese, where he made one neat save against Castrovilli, in his debut even though the Lupi lost 0-2, but was pretty decent against Pescara; the goal he allowed sure didn’t look like it crossed the line. Either way, he’s coming along nicely. After all, any goalkeeper who’s in contention for a spot at the age of 19 is fine. With a contract running out in 2021, we wouldn’t be surprised if Pantaleo Corvino tried to get him an extension in the next year or so, as Cerofolini looks like he could well be Serie A material at some point.

Gabriele Gori (Foggia)

The 19-year-old hitman’s difficult first season with the Satanelli has seen him drop from first choice to unused substitute in just a couple of months, although a start last week against Cittadella could indicate that he’s working his way back into Gianluca Grassadonia’s good graces, despite his lack of a single league goal this year. Against Cittadella, he showcased all the skills that earned him such a big reputation: strength, pace, and a knack for finding space. The problem was that, even though he got himself into the right spots at the right times, his finishing is just a bit off; he missed two pretty decent chances, which is perhaps why he found himself back on the bench most recently against Brescia. While it’s hardly the optimal start to a professional career, we remain convinced that he’s going to be a productive striker for a long time. Whether that manifests itself this year or next, he’s got the talent and the character to make himself a force on the peninsula for the next decade-plus. And even if we’re wrong, he could easily have a future in film because my goodness is he a handsome young man.

Luca Ranieri (Foggia)

The 19-year-old leftback is settling in with the Satanelli. He’s now made 6 appearances, including 3 straight starts, although he hasn’t managed to grab a spot on the wing in Grassadonia’s 3-5-2. Rather, he’s been operating on the right of the back three, which has obviously been an adjustment. Full credit to Ranieri, though, who’s been quite good for the most part, using his natural athleticism to make up for any mental lapses. The only real shortcoming he’s exhibited has been a vulnerability in the air, and that’s hardly surprising for a guy who’s 178 cm (5’10) and playing a role that requires a lot more leaping than he’s ever done. The presence of David Hancko muddles his future with Fiorentina, but he looks like he could wind up being a steady Serie A contributor sooner rather than later and we’re thrilled for him.

Andrés Schetino (Cosenza)

The 24-year-old Uruguayan midfield enforcer has been out with an ankle injury since the end of August, with no timetable given for his return. Given Cosenza’s scrappy league form, you get the sense that he’d at least have a chance to play if he were healthy, but it’s yet another bad break for a player whose luck has simply been awful since moving to Europe. With a contract that runs out at the end of next season, he needs to get healthy and show a spark if he wants to keep the dream alive on this side of the Atlantic.

Mattia Trovato (Cosenza)

The 20-year-old winger, who we think is rather miscast in manager Piero Braglia’s 3-5-2, suffered a knee ligament injury in training last month and will be on the shelf until mid-March. It’s a serious disappointment for a guy who’s obviously earned Fiorentina’s confidence—Corvino handed him a contract extension last year—despite a lack of playing time going into his second year on loan with the Lupi. We’re wishing him every success in his recovery and a quick return to the form that saw him earn a cap with the Italy U18s a couple of years ago.

Lorenzo Venuti (Lecce)

The 23-year-old defender has come on like gangbusters for the Giallorossi, rocketing past Riccardo Fiamozzi for the rightback job, although he was most recently recast as a centerback for this week’s 4-2 loss at league-leading Pescara, which must have been an unpleasant reminder of last year’s miserable season with Benevento (Lollo is NOT a central defender, we learned). He did score his first goal of the year the week before that, though, with what turned out to be the winner against Crotone; even though the goal itself was, erm, not exactly conventional, it showed what Venuti’s all about: energy, attitude, and a bit of unexpected skill (also, note that the assist came from ex-Viola prospect Jack Petriccione, who’s been brilliant for Lecce all year).

Basically, things are going swimmingly for the Montevarchi-born man. He’s clawed his way to a starting berth in his preferred role and is quickly becoming indispensable to manager (and ex-Viola star) Fabio Liverani. With Kevin Diks already on the roster and Fiorentina permanently linked to one rightback or another, Venuti’s future may lie outside of Florence, but he’s going to have a long career as a solid professional; honestly, we’re worried he’ll join the ranks of Petriccione, Leonardo Capezzi, Gianluca Mancini, and countless other talented players who’ve been tossed aside by the Viola only to rise to prominence elsewhere soon after.

Many Viola players are out on loan for the 2014-15 season, it is Viola Nation's pleasure to bring you all the important updates on how they are performing outside the Artemio Franchi, in the hopes of glorious returns.

During 2013/2014 summer transfer windows, the following players have been loaned:

Facundo Roncaglia

27 Years Old, Central/Right Defender

Loaned to Genoa

Roncaglia was loaned on the last day of the transfer window (1st Sep 2014). His loan contract period is set for one year, and the contract includes an option to buy, with one of Fiorentina's fan favorites set to stay in Genoa €3 million. Since the loan deal was struck right after the first match day in Serie A, Roncaglia will be debuting for Genoa against none other than Fiorentina.

Leonardo Capezzi

19 Years Old, Central Midfielder

Loaned to AS Varese

Varese is currently competing in Serie B after barely managing to stay in the second division in Italy when they finished 18th last season. Fiorentina have also let the youngster go on the last day of the transfer window after securing a few arrivals that would see Capezzi only warming the bench for the rest of the season. Capezzi participated in a Serie B match on 7th Sep on the bench against Carpi. The Viola young man will be facing Lazio this December in the Coppa Italia with his new club.

Cristiano Piccini

21 Years Old, Right Back

Loaned to Real Betis

Piccini is off to the Spanish second division after a loan spell at Livorno last season. Terms and negotiations were concluded with a one year loan for the right back on 27th Aug 2014. Piccini played his first match with Real Betis last Sunday and suffered a 4-1 hammering from Ponferradina, where he did however manage to impress the Real Betis faithful.

Matias Vecino

23 Years Old, Attacking Midfielder

Loaned to Empoli

Newly promoted Empoli reached a deal with Fiorentina for Vecino's loan spell on 14th August 2014. The Uruguayan took the number 88 and recorded an assist in the Coppa Italia, where Empoli beat L'Aquila 3-0. In Serie A, Vecino played well against Udinese and impressed along with his new teammates before Udinese broke down the Tuscan blues with two goals on the hour mark.

Marko Bakic

20 Years Old, Attacking Midfielder

Loaned to Spezia

After failing to impress Montella or the fans last season, Bakic is off to Serie B to join Spezia on loan with the option to buy. Fiorentina included a counter buy-out clause so that they can bring back the Montenegrin back to Florence if he suddenly turns out to be Rui Costa. The date of the agreement was 12th August 2014, and is set for one season. In the Coppa Italia, Bakic played as a late substitute in a failed attempt to neutralize a 2-1 comeback made by Perugia. The Spezia coach repeated himself in the first Serie B match against Varese, bringing Bakic on after conceding a goal at the 67th minute, but with different results; they equalized shortly thereafter. Bakic's new team then conceded a penalty just two minutes after leveling and ended up losing. Bakic did not make the bench in the second match (probably?) due to a minor injury, but his team won 2-1 thanks to 8 yellow cards and two red cards on Frosinone players... what?!

Michele Camporese

22 Years Old, Central Defender

Loaned to Bari

With Montella still not sold on the young Italian's abilities to make the first team, Bari brought in the defender on the 11th of August on a one year long contract deal. Bari coach Mangia has kept Camporese on the bench on three different occasions so far. He choose to insert Camporese in the third qualifying round match of the Coppa Italia against Avellino, bizarrely right after the opposition completed a 2-1 comeback. As a Fiorentina fan it is unsettling to see such a promising talent playing only 8 minutes in a losing match, and as a right back not as a center back.

Rafal Wolski

21 Years Old, Attacking Midfielder

Loaned to Bari

Wolski joined his Viola teammate Camporese on the 28th August 2014 on a one year loan. Wolski made the bench in Mangia's squad in the first Serie B match and did not make the squad at all in the loss against Perugia.

Kenneth Zohore

20 Years Old, Forward

Loaned to Goteborg (Sweden)

This could be the year to break out for the young Ivorian talent. He was loaned out to Goteborg, when the Swedish first division league was only match days shy of the finish line. Zohore started on the bench in his first match and only came on at the 87th minute in a match that ended 1-1 against Atvidabergs FF. The player was then moved to the U21 team and started one match late last month and was substituted after failing to score after 72 minutes. The first team played three more matches in the league without the presence of Zohore who seems to be having difficulties matching his loan spell at Brondby last season, where he scored 5 goals in 29 appearances.

Steve Beleck

21 Years Old, Right Wing

Loaned to Crotone

The Cameroon / French national impressed the fans in Fiorentina friendly matches this summer, but keeping Cuadrado played a part in the club loaning him out on the last day of the transfer window. Beleck was loaned to Crotone on a one year long contract deal. Beleck played as a center forward for 90 minutes in his debut against US Latina Calcio in Serie B, but failed to score. The match was lost due to a late winner by the opposition.

Maxwell Acosty

22 Years Old, Right Wing

Loaned to Modena

The Acosty loan deal was reached on 25th July 2014, where Acosty joined Viola teammate Salifu in Serie B. Acosty probably had the best start to his loan spell of all Fiorentina players. He played 3 full matches out of the possible 4 between Serie B and Coppa Italia, and scored the tying goal against Cittadella, giving his new club a valuable point.

Matos Ryder

21 Years Old, Forward

Loaned to Cordoba (La Liga)

Matos is out of Serie A and into La Liga to strengthen Cordoba's attack, with the agreement reached on 21st July 2014. The Brazilian's debut was in a 2-0 loss against Real Madrid, where the coach chose to substitute him on the hour mark after playing him as a second striker. His second match was not better as he played as a left winger and substituted right after the first half with the score 0-0; the match ended 1-1 against Celta de Vigo.

Amidu Salifu

21 Years Old, Central Midfielder

Loaned to Modena

Amidu has been at Modena for a year and is continuing his loan spell for another year. The loan deal is set to expire in summer 2015. Salifu is a personal favorite among the young players for me and has the potential to strengthen Fiorentina's defensive midfield capabilities. In the Coppa Italia, Salifu appeared in both winning matches against Brianza and Palermo, accumulating two yellow cards (one in each match). He played in both Serie B matches as well, where Modena drew against Cittadella and lost to Lanciano.

Ante Rebic

20 Years Old, Left Wing

Loaned to Leipzig (Bundesliga 2)

Ante Rebic had a dream chance to shine last season, when Rossi and Gomez were injured at the same time, but did not come through (unlike Matos). His inexperience showed and it was time to send him away to gain experience. A one year loan deal was reached with Leipzig Red Bull from the German second division league on 3rd August 2014. Wearing the number 10 for his new team, Ante was not included in the squad for the first two matches and was substituted in the third game in the last 24 minutes; the match ended as a scoreless tie with Frankfurt.
