An answer to our midfield woes?

Pradè is an interesting man. He will be as dormant as a vampire during July and then as the sun sets into the night of August he will be frantically seeking any blood he can. In the past few days alone, we’ve secured a ‘Sassuolo double:’ Kevin-Prince Boateng and the very exciting Pol Lirola swapping black and green for purple. Although some reports had linked us with Radja Nainggolan (recreating with Boateng everyone’s Fifa 14 Ultimate Team), it seems far more likely that Diego Demme of Red Bull Leipzig will be joining us.

A once-capped German international (with an Italian father and German mother ‘Alla Montolivo’), Demme has been at the East German side since 2014. Leipzig have established themselves as one of the crème de la crèmes in German football. Their rise has been meteoric (sure cash helped, but hey). If you are curious to know more about their 10-year history, this article on Sportskeeda gives you a brief and insightful recap. He was signed in the 13/14 January transfer window from SC Paderborn 07, when Leipzig was playing in 3. Liga (the third tier of German football). He immediately settled in as a key figure of the midfield as they were promoted at the end of that season. Two years in 2. Bundesliga followed and despite more players coming in, Diego kept his place in the starting XI. He even captained the side for the first time in 2017. Not bad for a lad signed for €350,000.

If the deal is to go through (with Corriere Dello Sport claiming he will have a medical over the weekend) it would be a very solid signing for the squad. In desperate need for reinforcements in the middle of the park, Demme will provide some stability as well as experience. He is still only 27, so will have a good couple of years ahead of him. Don’t expect goals, he puts the defensive into midfielder scoring only once in his whole time at Leipzig. When he did finally score, he lost a tooth. Only scoring in style.

My good friend Wolfram lives in Leipzig. I texted him asking if he knew anything about Demme:

‘hey man, I’m writing a report for the Fiorentina website about Diego Demme, do you know anything about him?’

‘Yeah, he’s a good player. My friend met him at a carwash’

And if that isn’t the kind of hype you need, I don’t know what is.
