Fiorentina have already started dealing with the glut of mediocrity at right back, offloading Bruno Gaspar to Sporting, but we always expected that the club would make further moves at the position. Sure enough, the next one seems to be taking shape: Genoa have publicly expressed interest in the former youth international.
The versatile defender spent a difficult season with Benevento, earning the dubious distinction of starting for the second worst defensive team in Serie A history. However, Lolo’s much better than that hose performances indicate. In a friendlier setup, he could definitely come good.
The Griffoni could be a solid fit. While they have a number of unproven young fullbacks on the roster, there’s precious little top flight experience in the group and Venuti has a full year at that level, which should give him the inside track for a big role.
The formula for the move remains a mystery. Venuti signed an extension last summer which would keep him in Florence until 2021, hinting at the faith the Viola have in him for the long term. A loan or a transfer with a fairly low buyback clause seem like the likeliest outcomes, and could work out pretty well for all parties.
