We always knew that Fiorentina would have to replace Milan Badelj, and now it sounds like Panteleo Corvino is close to doing just that. Reports this morning indicate that the Viola are close to signing Sporting Lisbon’s 26-year-old midfielder Rodrigo Battaglia, with an official announcement expected within days.
Battaglia, who was called to Argentina’s preliminary World Cup squad, was one of the players attacked by Sporting ultras, so it’s easy to see why he’d want out of Lisbon. It’s their loss, as he’s a very solid regista: physically strong, tireless, and adept at breaking up play and winning the ball, he’s quite good in possession too, happy to switch play but probably at his best when asked to keep it simple.
Given his desire to find pastures new, he’s available for a discount in the region of €7 million. It’d be a heck of a deal for a talented player if it goes through and very much a Corvino deal, as it would materialize with almost no warning. It’s unclear what this move would do to the Mario Pašalić deal, but all signs indicate that the the Croatian remains in play as well.
