Fiorentina are set to make their biggest breakthrough of the summer mercato with Brazilian winger Gerson set to join the club.
It’s been well known that La Viola have been in the market for a winger to support the likes of Giovanni Simeone and Federico Chiesa. It was widely expected to be Marko Pjaca of Juventus, however, all signs now point to Gerson.
Gerson Santos Da Silva joined Roma for €16 million in the summer of 2016 from Brazilian side Fluminense. He has gone on to play 42 times in all competitions—however, he has only started 10 of the 28 league games he’s played in.
It has been reported in the Italian media that the deal will initially be a season-long loan move with an obligation to buy for €15 million. It’s a hefty fee for a player with limited experience in Europe but a gamble by Corvino which could pay off.
Fiorentina have beaten off competition from Atletico Mineiro and Tuscan neighbours Empoli to the signature of Gerson. Corvino not only sees potential but his ability to play in multiple positions as a key factor in the move. His ability to play on either flank and as a mezzala has attracted the interest from La Viola.
Gerson only scored two goals during his time at the Giallorossi, which Viola fans might just remember. He bagged a brace at the Franchi last season as the away side came out 4-2 winners. For both goals, he displayed his ability to cut inside and finish well past Marco Sportiello.
