After so many disappointments this Mercato, there is some very good news that Marco Benassi has swapped Turin for Florence and joined for a reported €10 million plus bonuses.
Marco Benassi, who will arrive in Florence on the day and attend medical visits tomorrow morning, will sign a contract that will tie him to the Violet Club for the next 5 years.”
There was a major gap in the midfield with the departures of Borja Valero and Matias Vecino. However, under so much pressure Corvino has done a fine job adding Benassi for so cheap. To secure a 22-year-old, well established in Serie A and having already captained Torino, is some achievement; to pull off this deal says a lot for Corvino's efforts.
Importantly, Corvino also has given Stefano Pioli more depth in the midfield with Sanchez, Badelj, Cristoforo and Veretout already in the squad. Not only is there depth but quality. Fiorentina have acquired a leader, he’s not only captained Torino, but the national u21 team. To add to his game he can also find the back of the net, scoring 5 goals last year. Benassi will replace Vecino in the team, being 3 years his junior it could be a great deal in the long run given the potential he has already shown.
One of the biggest surprises with this deal is, why on earth are Torino letting him go and for so cheap? The answer is due to Mihajlovic. Benassi just doesn't fit into his style of play, as Benassi began to feature less and less last year as the former Fiorentina coach referred Afriyie Acquah.
With the Eysseric also arriving in Florence, it looks as if the clubs transfer business has taken a turn and thankfully for the better.
Here’s a chance to see the best of Benassi last season and the type of midfielder Corvino has brought to the club.
