In yet another Corvinata, Fiorentina have announced the signing of former Bari rightback Giuseppe Scalera. The Italian U19 international is generally considered one of the brighter defensive prospects on the peninsula, so it’s probably a good bit of business, although we have yet to hear the financial details of the deal.
Scalera is just 18 years old, but had begun to establish himself as first choice for manager Stefano Colantuono, starting 2 of the past 3 for the Galletti. Naturally a rightback, his versatility is one of his most impressive attributes, as he can do a job on the left as well as push forward to a wide midfield role.
He’s certainly got a lot of growing to do before he’s ready to add a lot to Fiorentina, frankly, but he should slot in right away with the Primavera. As the captain of Bari’s Primavera side, you know that he’s a steady presence in the dressing room. Along with Lorenzo Venuti and Kevin Diks (to say nothing of old man Gilberto), the Viola are now stacked with rightbacks who look excellent in the international youth ranks.
