Fiorentina target Benfica defender Lisandro Lopez

Fiorentina may be riding the crest of a wave as current Serie A leaders; but in order to mount a successful challenge on three fronts this season, they absolutely must bring in a central defender in January. As things stand, Facundo Roncaglia, Davide Astori and Gonzalo Rodríguez are the only out and out centre halves on the viola's books; meaning that without strengthening in January, injuries and suspensions could cause a crisis at the heart of the defence.

The good news is that the club are already looking at suitable additions ready for when the window opens. Benfica's 26 year old centre back Lisandro Lopez seems to be heading up the list, according to market expert Gianluca DiMarzio. Fiorentina's interest in the player reportedly dates back to the summer window, when representatives met with Lopez but Benfica refused to sell. The Argentine arrived in Portugal during summer 2013 from Avallaneda's Arsenal de Sarandí for an undisclosed fee and then spent a year on loan at Getafe. In recent times, Lopez has been frustrated with his lack of playing time and could be looking for a move away. Due to the fact that coach Paulo Sousa has an excellent working relationship with Benfica's Sporting Director - his friend, compatriot and former Fiorentina legend Rui Costa - the negotiation process may prove to be just that little bit easier.

Also still on the radar is AC Milan's out of favour defender Philippe Mexès. The Frenchman was targeted by the viola in the summer, only for the rossonero to sensationally change their minds about the transfer at the last minute. The player's famous tendancy for lack of discipline, however remains a concern.
