There are still seven weeks to go until the beginning of Fiorentina’s 2022-23 season, but anticipation is already building for the Viola’s first European campaign in six years. The major difference between this year’s schedule and those of the past is the fact that there’s a World Cup in Qatar happening right in the middle of the season in November and December. Thus, there will be no customary late-August break, and instead, only one break will happen all fall from September 18-31.
As far as the schedule itself goes, Fiorentina opens with as easy a fixture as possible at home to new boys Cremonese. Their next two fixtures at the Franchi, against Napoli and Juventus, will give us a good idea of this team’s talent and character.
January is the toughest month of the season, beginning with matchups against ambitious Monza and a Sassuolo team we can never seem to beat. Afterward, we travel to the Olimpico twice in three weeks to face Roma and Lazio, with a home match against Torino in between.
If Fiorentina wins their playoff tie on the 18th and 25th of August to qualify for the Conference League, their depth will be tested. Matchday three happens to fall before the home leg against Lazio and after Atalanta.
Thus, we’ll see what moves Fiorentina makes in the mercato, but now it does feel as though the new season isn’t quite so far away. Believe it or not, it’s just two weeks until the entire Viola squad returns to Moena for preseason preparations to begin.
