Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has this morning confirmed that he has appointed ex-Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella as the new coach of the blucerchiati. Rumours of his appointment had been rife, even before the sacking of previous coach Walter Zenga, but the announcement was delayed due to complex contractual issues that had to be resolved with Fiorentina.

Despite having been relieved of his coaching duties in the summer, Montella was still under contract with Fiorentina and subject to a €5 million release fee. During several days of negotiations, the Genova based club have successfully resolved the issue with the Fiorentina owners and have agreed a release fee believed to be in the region of €2.25 million.
During his three seasons with Fiorentina, Montella notched up 81 wins in 153 matches, achieving 3 consecutive fourth placed finishes in Serie A, runner up in the Coppa Italia and a semi final place in the Europa League. The aeroplanino; still held in fond regard by many Fiorentina fans, thanked Andrea Della Valle and spoke of the "splendid memories" held in his heart during his three years at the club.
Aside from the home fixture with Sampdoria on 3rd April, we wish Vincenzo good luck in his new pursuit. After what was quite a painful split in the summer; and with things seemingly working out very well indeed with Paulo Sousa at Fiorentina, it seems only right that he should find a new club.
