Friday Poll: Where does Fiorentina finish the season?

We know who’s on the roster for the second half of the season, but we don’t know how they’ll play.

The dust has settled on another transfer window, albeit a less frantic one that we’re used to. Josip Brekalo and Salvatore Sirigu are the only new faces arriving in January. Both will fill important roles for Fiorentina, but neither is a nailed-on starter, although the return from injury of guys like Gaetano Castrovilli, Riccardo Sottil, and Lucas Martínez Quarta could prove more impactful.

It’s now on manager Vincenzo Italiano to figure out how to assemble these pieces into a squad that can do something interesting. While Fiorentina’s Serie A prospects are pretty grim—12th place with 24 points, 13 behind AS Roma and European qualification—the Conference League (a tricky date with Braga and subsequent dates against teams like West Ham United, Villarreal, and Nice) and especially the Coppa Italia (a two-legged tie against lowly Cremonese, then the winner of Juventus and Inter Milan) beckon.

While the Coppa sees Fiorentina in with its best chance of hoisting a trophy since 2001, that league form is tougher to predict. The Viola doubtless have the quality to make a run up the standings, but how far can they climb? There weren’t any big (or even many small) January additions throughout Serie A, but moves on the margins could make all the difference.
