Gaetano Castrovilli was reportedly upset about missing out on Italy’s squad for the Euros after being one of the last players out, but Roberto Mancini wound up bringing him back in after Lorenzo Pellegrini pulled out with an injury. While losing the AS Roma man and Inter Milan’s Stefano Sensi (who of course got hurt too) is obviously less than ideal for the Azzurri, the midfield still includes Marco Verratti, Jorginho, Nicolò Barella, Manuel Locatelli, Matteo Pessina, Bryan Cristante, and now Tanino. That’s an outrageous amount of sheer talent, but all those players offer different skill sets so Mancini can chop and change according to circumstance.
For Fiorentina fans, though, this adds an extra wrinkle. Gennaro Gattuso is going to completely overhaul the team’s tactical structure, and there’s no shortage of links to big name players. With Italy poised to make a deep run in the tournament, that means Castrovilli could arrive late to preseason training and thus miss out on some crucial weeks getting on the same page as his teammates.
On the other hand, though, this should settle the Viola number 10 down a bit after he openly questioned his future in Florence following the initial selection. He’s got what he wants and will likely be a lot happier with where he is in his career now. On the other other hand, there’s always the risk of him picking up an injury in the tournament, which would set back him back even farther.
Add to the risk column another two: first, that, even though he likely won’t play much, the extra wear and tear and resultant lack of rest could put him at risk of injury even if he doesn’t get crunched in an actual game. Too, if he ends up balling out, he could put himself in the shop window, as tends to happen with these tournaments.
