Pre-match

There weren’t any huge surprises from either side, although the Stadio Renato dall’Ara had taken a pretty good soaking—players wouldn’t stop slipping all over the place—and the wind created all kinds of problems for anyone trying to track a high pass.

First half

Dušan Vlahović slotted home a penalty for the third straight game after Adama Souamoro blocked an Erick Pulgar shot with his hand.

Retired Padawan Rodrigo Palacio equalized after latching onto a nice Emanuel Vignato through ball when the Fiorentina defense, astonishingly, switched off.

Second half

Lorenzo Venuti uncorked a very nice cross to the back post, where Giacomo Bonaventura had snuck past Matias Svanberg to meet it and turn it home on the slide.

Vignato set up Palacio again, finding the old man’s late run with a neat cross and letting him glance the header home.

Dušan, however, gave Palacio an Okay Boomer with his own brace, taking advantage of Łukasz Skorupski flapping at a corner to tap home (with his right) to retake the lead.

And everyone in the stadium knew how Bologna would respond: Vignato found Palacio with a through ball after Nikola Milenković kept him onside.

Full time

Goals: Palacio 31’ (ass. Vignato) 71’ (ass. Vignato) 84’ (ass. Vignato); Vlahović PK 22’ 73’ (ass. Pulgar), Bonaventura 64’ (ass. Venuti)

Cards: Souamoro 20’, Svanberg 47’; Milenković 75’, Igor 79’

What’s next

Vlahović now sits on 19 goals. That’s the most any Viola player has had in Serie A since Alberto Gilardino in 2008-2009; one more and he’ll be the club’s first 20+ scorer since Luca Toni battered in 31. On the downside, Fiorentina turn down a chance to pass Genoa in the standings and stay in 13th with 35 points. With Cagliari earning a draw at the death at Napoli, the relegation race remains very tight indeed. Bologna stay in 12th with 39 points.
