Friday Poll: Should Fiorentina extend Cáceres?

The Uruguayan defender’s contract runs out at the end of the year, but he could prove a useful piece for the Viola in the short term.

While recent chatter amongst the Fiorentina faithful has been about Dušan Vlahović and a pending contract extension, another large human has also made a case for a new deal. Martín Cáceres recently told the press that he’s willing to reduce his €1.2 salary to spend another year in Florence. Obviously, that decision will rely mostly on the new manager and new sporting director to figure out, but let’s see if we can give them a hand.

On the one hand, the Uruguayan will turn 34 next month, has a lengthy injury history that you feel like is bound to rear its head at some point soon, and has a penchant for rash decisions at the worst possible moment: conceding a penalty and losing his man on a corner against AC Milan, missing a clearance against Spezia to let Dani Verde walk through on goal, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

On the other hand, he can play anywhere across a back five and fits various different types of tactical approaches. His reinvention as a wingback this year has been fascinating, especially as Cesare Prandelli has ordered him to underlap straight into the box to provide a big target for crosses rather than keeping him wide, where his lack of technique and crossing mean he’s a non-factor. He also seems perfectly happy to operate primarily as a substitute, which, combined with that versatility, makes him an excellent squad player. Plus, his fashion statements are always hilarious.
