After Emiliano Bigica left his post as the head coach of the Primavera, we were all quite curious about who would step up into his shoes. As of yesterday, we have an answer, and it’s Alberto Aquilani. The former Fiorentina midfielder began working with the youth players at the start of the season before Giuseppe Iachini called him up to serve as a technical coach for the first team.

This will be Aquaman’s first head coaching job so he may need a bit of time to learn the ropes, but he already knows the players from his time under Bigica. It’s a mystery what sort of tactics he’ll employ, but the safe guess is that he’ll initially continue Bigica’s vision of quick ball movement and width in attack before implementing his own identity on the side.

Given that he was always a thoughtful player on the pitch, we’re betting that he’ll be a success and help return the Primavera to the top of the table after a rough couple of years under Bigica (although that was largely due to young talent being promoted to the first team more than anything the mister did). There are some fascinating names on the books for him to mold, so he should be able to get the production line rolling again.

It’s pretty fun that players will go from Marco Donadel’s tutelage to Aquilani as they rise through the ranks. You can bet that, at the very least, they’re all going to excel at shooting from distance.
