Cesare Prandelli is Fiorentina’s coach now. According to the scuttlebutt, he’ll only serve in that capacity until the end of this season, at which point he’ll slot into a job overseeing youth development. Given his fun zio/nonno energy (depending on your age), that feels like the best possible job for him, and he’ll likely excel in spotting and developing talent.
But. What if a Prandelli-inspired Viola blaze through the remaining 31 Serie A games and wind up qualifying for Europe? What if he takes this team on a run through the Coppa Italia and wins the club its first silverware since 2001 (and no, the Costa del Sol Unesco trophy doesn’t count)? What if he reproduces the displays that saw Fiorentina become a perennial threat to advance out of the group stages in whichever continental competition they were in?
We’re all excited for the arrival of Maurizio Sarri or whichever big name manager Rocco Commisso and company bring aboard, but would they make the change if Prandelli whips this squad into shape? It could end up feeling a little like the Stefano Pioli/Ralf Rangnick situation at AC Milan from last summer, and could lead to all sorts of awkwardness. Fortunately, this is Fiorentina, so the odds of everything breaking right are slim to none, but humor us for just a moment.
