Atalanta 3-1 Fiorentina: Highlights

An experimental formation falls flat as flat can be in Bergamo.

Pre-match

Gian Piero Gasperini shuffled his defense with Andrea Masiello and Berat Djimisti and brought Remo Freuler and Robin Gosens back into the midfield.

Stefano Pioli made a lot of changes, using a 3-4-3 shape with Germán Pezzella (who’d surprisingly returned early from a knee injury) at the back in place of Vitor Hugo. Edimilson Fernandes and Vincent Laurini both found space as well, while the tridente of Federico Chiesa, Luis Muriel, and Giovanni Simeone started together.

First half

Luis Muriel got the visitors out to a flying start with a neat finish in the third minute.

At minute 13, Atalanta put the ball out to allow a minute of applause for Davide Astori, which reduced Josip Iličić to tears.

He shook that off, though, to equalize past Alban Lafont via a big deflection. To his credit, the ex-Viola attacker didn’t celebrate.

Just after the half hour mark, though, the hosts pulled ahead through Papu Gómez.

At 40’, Germán Pezzella made a monster tackle on Duván Zapata in the area to keep Fiorentina in it.

That led to Federico Chiesa doing this at the other end.

Second half

Just before the hour, Robin Gosens doubled the lead for la Dea.
