Fiorentina have seemed to find a diamond in the rough with German Pezzella. The 26 year old center back pushed his way into a starting role and has not looked back since. Pezzella had a great rapport with the late Davide Astori and is the perfect man to go into next season as one of the top defenders on the roster. The good news is, Fiorentina is looking to keep the Argentinian defender according to Carlos Volcano of tribal football.
Even though Fiorentina want to sign him after his loan spell with the team is over, that does not mean Pezzella will stay. Spanish club Atletico Madrid is sniffing around the idea of bringing Pezzella in to improve their defense. It is easy to think that the 26 year old defender would want to try his craft with Atletico Madrid. As a team that currently stands in second place in La Liga, Atletico gives Pezzella the best chance to play important European football.
The hope is that the one season in Florence has sold Pezzella on the future of la Viola. If he enjoys his teammates and the city there is the chance he stays. Another important factor is playing time. Pezzella knows that he will be Stefano Pioli’s first choice at center back in 2018-2019. It is not guaranteed that Pezzella will get consistent playing time with Atletico Madrid. Atletico have a center back combo of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez that have had a decent season controlling the back line of the defense.
Pezzella is still under contract with Real Betis and will have to be transferred if any team other team wants to get his services. If Atletico is serious about transferring for Pezzella it will be tough for Fiorentina to compete. Even though he may like playing in Florence, money talks and Atletico is one of the better football clubs in Europe. Fiorentina has not shown to be willing to spend too much money on players even if they deserve to be with the club. At this point, all fans can do is hope he finds a way to negotiate his way to Florence next season. For now just enjoy watching him on the pitch wearing purple.
