With so many key players leaving the club in the past 12 months, Davide Astori has attempted put a stop to the trend, committing himself to the club until 2022.

The Fiorentina captain has agreed a three year extension to his current deal which was set to expire in July 2019. It comes as a welcome relief after talks between the club and Milan Badelj have once again stalled.

Astori has been a consummate professional joining the club from Cagliari in 2015, he’s played over 100 games for the club and adds a wealth of experienced to a very young side.

While having the youth in the side with the likes of Nikola Milenkovic is positive for the future, having Astori around is only going to help him. The club needs players who know the club inside out. Astori is now 31 and himself and Cyril Therau (34) are the only two players over 30, the former will be 34 by the time his contract expires. The club needs players who have been there and done it. Astori has the chance to become a role model to younger players in the team now and over the next few years, which is only a bonus for the club.

Astori while being a very good defender even offers himself going forward and his calmness on the ball gives the side something different, as he displayed in the last game getting the assist for Biraghi’s stunner.

Another positive is that we are going to see more of German Pezzella and Astori at the back, providing Pezzella makes his loan permanent. The pair have been an incredibly solid partnership who look to compliment each other perfectly. Being a left footed center back is a welcome bonus, especially in a three at the back system, which could be the future with Milenkovic and Pezzella on his right hand side.
