"Why I chose Fiorentina? I was convinced by the thought of Batistuta..."
Ladies and Gentlemen, those are the words of Fiorentina's Giovanni Simeone. I could end this piece now, but incase you were in search of any more reason to absolutely adore the Argentine, I will gladly digress...
Simeone, since arriving, has expressed something very few players manage to get across, honest sincerity. Above the usual scripted, media friendly, PR boosting cliche's we so often hear, Simeone has demonstrated a clear desire about wanting Fiorentina, and has already worked out how to quench his cultural thirst...
"I’ve visited Florence Cathedral, but I’ve only just started here. I’m enchanted by works of art."
Although, whilst Simeone's floating thoughts about Batistuta warm our collective cockles, there is much, much more than raw emotion to get excited about over with Simeone.
The 22-year-old has the potential to be one heck of a striker for La Viola. A strong, athletic, resilient, pure No.9 who no doubt has the inherent drive to reach the top of his game. Considering Corvino managed to pick him up for circa-€15m, Simeone represents unbelievable value in the current market. Crucially, Simeone is now in the perfect environment to grow and develop, such an environment would have almost definitely not existed under Paulo Sousa's regime.
Stefano Pioli is clearly a coach he can confide in, hence when asked about him he replied,
"He’s a Coach that, if you go wrong, explains things to you. He’s a real point of reference for the team."
This tutelage is undeniably valuable to player at him stage in his development, and the fact he is surrounded by a plethora of exciting, blossoming talent only emphasises the very reality that Simeone has all the framework in place for him sky-rocket very soon.
One relationship we should all keep our eyes peeled for is, of course, his link with Federico Chiesa. Simeone's brilliant quote in which he compared Chiesa's tunnel-vision dribbling as like "...a mouse with cheese" is something we can all understand, and if both of them forge a strong bond provided the plentiful playing time they'll receive, its enough to make us forget the woes of last summer and focus on the potential Pioli has at his disposal. Simeone may very well be the tip of the iceberg, and with the Mercato aside, the sensible attitude to take is one of positivity, with our Batistuta-wannabe leading the line.
Oh, Simeone also went on to say that the "Europa is my dream..."... You'll fit in well here, Giovanni.
