Just when you thought the fire sale could not get any worse, the goalie of the future may be leaving the team. It was reported by Viola News that Benfica has checked in on the availability of the Polish goalkeeper. According to the article, the team gave a lukewarm response to inquiry, but did not throw the idea out of the window completely. It is possible that Drągowski will be sent out on loan for the season and at this point it looks like Benfica is the team at the front of the line.

Bartłomiej Drągowski is a 19 year old goalkeeper with all of the promise in the world. He saw limited action in 2016/2017 with Fiorentina and his action was not necessarily inspiring. With Ciprian Tătărușanu in France now with FC Nantes, this was supposed to be the year where Drago got a chance to prove his worth with the big club. That may not happen though because management brought in Marco Sportiello. Manager Stefano Pioli has already named Sportiello the starting goalkeeper going into next season. This makes sense from a tactical standpoint, Sportiellio is here to play. He was acquired on loan from Atalanta where he was the starter. It would not make sense for the guy to sit on the bench.

Unfortunately with this goalkeeper logjam there has to be an odd man out. Bartłomiej Drągowski probably believes he should be the guy in Florence. Given that he has a lot of hype behind him and the fact is Drągowski needs to get playing time somewhere in a top level in Europe. The Polish youngster may end up forcing his way out of Florence and to a top team in a different league. This would be a terrible loss for Fiorentina. They need to find a way to keep him in Florence. Sportiello is only on loan for one more season, therefore he might not be on the team in the 2018/2019 season. That would be the perfect time for Bartłomiej Drągowski to take over the full time duties in goal. Only time will tell if the Polish goalkeeper will stay in Florence, but Stefano Pioli would be smart to find a way to keep the young phenom.
