Yesterday, May 31, Fiorentina did not exercise the option to redeem Cristian Tello and have decided to delay it till the club has their annual transfer meetings this month with Corvino and Stefano Pioli.
Cristian Tello can look incredible on rare occasions. He's a player who on his day can be scintillating with his incredible speed. However, the challenge for players to get to the highest level is consistency and Tello has never found steady form.
With Pioli just confirmation from being the new coach, Tello may very well fit into his style of play, with either 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. Both are formations that need wingers and depth on the flanks, with the ability to play on both wings, meaning Tello could possibly be a bigger asset to the squad. One positive is also that we never have to see Tello play wingback again (hopefully).
Tello managed to score four goals and tally four assists this campaign in what has been a relatively average season for the Spaniard. If Tello is to stay his decision making is something that needs to vastly improve for him to be a regular starter. He will have serious competition from Federico Chiesa who had such a good debut season.
Tello was brought into replace Mohamed Salah who has since gone on to do great things at Roma. Tello is yet to get to those heights, and the former Barcelona trainee can no longer be classed as a young talent, he's in what could be classed as him prime years for a winger.
The 2017/18 season is massive one for Tello personally, with it likely to still be in Viola colors, it's going to be a challenge for him to realise his potential. However, under Pioli, it could give him the base to succeed.
