The U20 World Cup is going on right now in South Korea. The Azzurini sit 2nd in their group after a routine 0-2 win over South Africa. Juventus winger opened things up by winning and converting a first half penalty, but it was Livorno-owned striker Andrea Favilli who headed home the insurance goal. It wasn’t exactly a routine one, though, because, well, just watch the video.
That’s Fiorentina Primavera rightback Giuseppe Scalera whipping a throw-in about halfway across the field for Favilli to attack. We knew that Scalera was likely to be a good one when Corvino brought him and Gaetano Castrovilli in from Parma this winter. The rightback captained the Cruciati youth side for a couple of years and has seamlessly fit into manager Federico Guidi’s side as the starter.
Along with Kevin Diks, Lorenzo Venuti, and Gilberto, Scalera is one of a hatful of promising young rightbacks who’s fighting for a spot. While he probably won’t make his senior bow next year (expect a trip out on loan), he’s certainly got a leg up on the competition, as I don’t think any of them can do that.
