This weekend Fiorentina Women’s FC play host to a struggling Chieti, chasing a staggering 15th straight win.
Currently top of Serie A, six points clear of second-placed Brescia, la Viola’s ladies look set to make amends for having narrowly missed out on a Champion’s League place in their inaugral season. After a loss to Verona on the final match day of last season saw i Gialloblu take second place by a solitary point, la Viola brought in 10 new faces - 7 of them Italy internationals - over the Summer mercato in hopes of vying for the scudetto.
If the new group has had any difficulty building chemistry, it hasn’t shown on the pitch, where they’ve been dominating their opposition with fast attacking football every week. Standouts centre mid Alice Parisi and left winger Patrizia Caccamo look unstoppable on their day, whilst current capocannoniere Ilaria Mauro’s talent for finding herself free in the box has seen her score 14 goals in as many league games. Defensively the team is perhaps even more impressive, having conceded only 4 goals so far this season. Between the posts Stephanie Ohrstrom is rarely needed, but always dependable, and in front of her Florence natives Elena Linari and Alice Tortelli look like they could be the foundation of the backline for the next decade.
Newly promoted visitors Chieti have found goals hard to come by, scoring just 15, and were on the receiving end of a 6-0 demolishing in the reverse fixture. The Abruzzese team are currently tenth, two points clear of relegation, and will likely look to contain the Fiorentina front three in hope of a draw, rather than committing to attacking themselves.
The game kicks off at 14:30 local time this Saturday, and can be watched live, legally and for free on the club’s facebook page here.
