Pre-match

Stefano Pioli sent out his first XI. Giuseppe Iachini switched to a 3-4-3 with ex-Viola striker Alessandro Matri up top.

First half

At the 32 minute mark, Federico Chiesa found Jordan Veretout, who drew the defense inside and then laid off to Vincent Laurini on the overlap. The Frenchman swung in a tantalizing cross, and Giovanni Simeone duly leapt and headed it home with trademark power.

10 minutes later, Cyril Théréau held his run well to stay onside down the right, then played a wonderful low cross in front of the defense which Jordan Veretout met at the back post and finished first time to unleash a torrent of French Connection jokes.

Second half

Théréau picked up the ball near midfield about 71 minutes in and played a defense-splitting pass through to a streaking Chiesa, who burned past the defensive cover and neatly finished past Andrea Consigli.

Full time

Goals: Simeone 32’ (ass. Laurini), Veretout 42’ (ass. Théréau), Chiesa 71’ (ass. Théréau)
