Pre-match

Stefano Pioli handed starts to Bartłomiej Drągowski, Bruno Gaspar, Carlos Sánchez, Riccardo Saponara, and Khouma Babacar. Marco Giampaolo brought Valerio Verre and Ricky Álvarez into his starting lineup.

First half

Just 90 seconds in, Duván Zapata made an ill-advised backpass which Marco Benassi easily cut out. The Italian then played the ball through for Khouma Babacar, who held off Vasco Regini and smashed past Cristiano Puggioni.

At 39’, Edgar Barreto was in just the right place to lash home after a deflected shot fell to him off a corner, and he duly turned home. He was as close to offside as it’s possible to be, but was on.

Second half

Babacar again was the key man just before the hour mark, winning a penalty with a brilliant first touch to bring down a high ball in the area. Jordan Veretout duly sent Cristiano Puggioni the wrong way for the lead.

At 77’, Samp equalized through a PK of their own. Davide Astori clearly tripped Gastón Ramírez, and the Uruguayan slotted home the penalty, although Drągowski nearly reached it.

But minutes from full time, substitute Nicola Murru handled the ball in the box as Giovanni Simeone chased it down, and Veretout was again money from the spot.

Full time

Goals: Babacar 2’ (ass. Benassi), Veretout 59’ (PK ass. Babacar) 89’ (PK), Barreto 39’, Gastón Ramírez 77’ (PK)
