Pre-match

With Ciprian Tatarusanu injured, Marco Sportiello got his first start in goal. Borja Valero and Josip Ilicic returned to the first XI, while Federico Bernardeschi dropped to the bench. Sebastien de Maio deputized for the injured Gonzalo Rodriguez. Ivan Juric named more or less his expected eleven.

First half

The Viola opened the scoring when a Josip Ilicic cross snuck through the box and nestled its way into the net on the back post; it was not Eugenio Lamanna’s finest moment as a goalkeeper.

Federico Chiesa also rattled the woodwork, but the half ended with the Viola up 1-0.

Second half

Chiesa got his goal 5 minutes after half-time, when he picked up the ball on the edge of the box from Nikola Kalinic and fired a low, hard shot just inside the post.

Diego Simeone latched onto an Adel Taarabt through ball moments later, though, and got his finish over an onrushing Marco Sportiello to pull one back for the visitors.

Genoa equalized 2 minutes later when Oscar Hiljemark deflected a Taarabt shot into the net from a blatantly offside position.

Kalinic restored the lead just after the hour mark with a neatly-placed left-footed shot after Federico Bernardeschi kept the ball and found him with a brilliant cut-back.

The drama wasn’t finished, however, as Bernardeschi was judged to have handled in the area in the 84th minute, earning a Genoa penalty and a red card. Simeone slotted home to equalize.
