Fiorentina hoping to sign Maxi Olivera

The Peñarol leftback was recently named the Uruguayan League player of the season and is considered a potential replacement for Marcos Alonso.

With Marcos Alonso allegedly on his way to Chelsea for a lot of cash, Fiorentina is yet again looking at Peñarol for left back reinforcement, following the collapse of a deal for midfielder Nahitan Nandez. It has been reported Maximiliano ("Maxi") Olivera, a 24 year old fullback, has left for Europe to sign a contract.

Maxi Olivera, also called as El Negro (a nickname that will ideally not stick with him in Europe...) is a leftback who, like Alonso, has experience playing in the midfield and on the left side of the defense. Club captain and immediate ídolo with las Manyas, Olivera has recently been named the player of the season in for the 2015/2016 Uruguyan Primera.

Olivera started his career with Montevideo Wanderers of the Primera before moving to powerhouse Peñarol, and has experience playing in the Copa Libertadores.

As is often the case these days, Olivera is owned by Grupo Casal, and so Peñarol will receive nothing for his sale. Although Fiorentina are favorites to sign him, there have also been offers from Spain and the Netherlands.
