Alessandro Diamanti is the first signing of January transfer window for Fiorentina. Former Italian international underwent medicals in Florence today, and will sign the contract with the viola. Diamanti played for Chinese side Guangzhou, and will join the viola on loan, for two million euros, with a possibility to sign a permanent deal in the summer.
Diamanti featured in 24 games for Guangzhou Evergrande this season, scoring four goals. Before that, he spent three seasons in Bologna. Diamanti was also a Brescia, West Ham and Livorno player before that, and was part of Italy side that reached the finals of European Championship in 2012. Interestingly, this is a come back for Fiorentina. In 2002/2003, the trequartista played three games for Fiorentina (then Florentia Viola) in Serie C2.
The signing will no doubt be welcomed by Vincenzo Montella, who was clear in the press conference ahead of Parma game - Diamanti is the kind of player Fiorentina needs, among other things, to help Mario Gomez score more.
It will be interesting to see how will Diamanti fit in tactically, as he, while usually played in central positions, likes to drift to the right and receive the ball wide. That would mean he'd occupy the same space, more or less, as Juan Cuadrado. We hope the two will become a nightmare for opposition defenses on that side, but some doubt remains about whether he really is what Fiorentina needs right now.
