Semi-Finals Day 2: Third WC Final Copy

Argentina stops the Netherlands march towards the final and gives them no chance to lose a fifth World Cup final. Van Gaal’s brilliance against Costa Rica was replaced by greed and it cost him the match in penalty shootouts. Argentina will face Germany for the third time in the World Cup final after 1986 and 1990.

Julian Finney

ARGENTINA 0-0 (P4-2) NETHERLANDS

After the seven goals match one night before, both teams started the match off cautiously. Argentina had the upper hand in dangerous chances but Netherlands were better in possession. It could have gone either way but the Argentinean defense impressed and held off the best goal scoring team in the competition to Nil. A goal by Higuain was disallowed for offside. In the replays, it looked like the wrong call to me but since no one is making any fuss about it, then I must have missed something there. There was one turning point in the game; Minute 96 when Van Gaal gambled by substituting Van Persie by Huntelaar using up his third substitution. The gamble proved to be a failure when the Argentineans surprisingly looked like a team dependant on defense and eventually Cillessen had no chance saving any of the penalties. Romero was able to save the first and the second Netherlands penalty shots and Argentina had to wait for Veteran Maxi Rodiguez to score the fourth penalty for Argentina to qualify to the Finals
