Knockout Stage Day 17: Secret is Yellow

The hosts were inches away from being knocked out of the World Cup but the goal posts, top bar and Julio Cesar denied Chile a deserved victory. Colombia knocked out Uruguay as they controlled the game and Viola’s Cuadrado leads the World Cup assists list with four in four matches.

BRAZIL 1-1 (P 3-2) CHILE

David Luiz opened the scoring for Brazil in the 18th minute and Alexis tied the score at minute 32. After Chile goal, the match was promising to be a thriller of goals but the brilliance of each team's goalkeeper kept that from happening. Bravo from Chile and Veteran Julio Cesar combined saved 10 difficult strikes including penalty kicks and the goal posts saved two. Bravo was tested and passed with flying colors throughout the match and most of the extra time halves but failed to match Julio's experience in the penalty shootouts for Brazil to emerge winners and wait not longer than a few hours to learn of their Quarterfinals South American opponents

URUGUAY 0-2 COLOMBIA

The all South American night ended with a match between Uruguay and Colombia. The irony here was that Uruguay was pretty much toothless. On the other side, Colombia was more than hungry especially Falcao understudy James. He scored two goals in the match; the first at the half hour mark with a long shot that hit the top bar and down to the net. The second goal was made in Italy as Udine's Armero crossed to the far post for Fiorentina's Cuadrado to head the ball down to World Cup current top goal scorer James to tap it in the net at minute 50. Argentinian coach Pekerman made some defensive substitutions and was successful in stopping any Uruguayan chances from posing any danger. Both Cuadrado and James left the field with standing ovations from the Maracana 73,000 spectators. Colombia goalkeeper Ospina deserves credits for keeping a clean sheet and saving a few time near the match end to demoralize Uruguay.
