World Cup Day 15: Revenge Stage Setup!

Group stage ended and the Round of 16 shaped up and promises of great matches and epic semifinals. Germany and USA qualified from Group G while Belgium and Algeria qualified from group H.

Martin Rose

GROUP G

The most complicated group in terms of qualifying chances played the early matches on the last day of the group stage. USA with four points played against Germany and lost with one goal deficit. The goal was scored by Mueller who joins Messi and Neymar as the World Cup top goal scorers at 4 goals each. USA however has qualified thanks to Germany itself since they scored 4 goals in the Portuguese net in an earlier match making it too difficult for knee hurt Ronaldo and Co. to overcome that disadvantage even though they beat strong Ghana 2-1. The goals were scored by Boye and Ronaldo for Portugal and Gyan for Ghan.

GROUP H

Belgium played against Korea Republic and was able to win the match and the Group with a full mark. The match's one goal was scored by Vertonghen. Capello and Russia will have to try again when they host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 since fighters Algeria were able to do the minimum drawing with them at the hour mark. Russia leading goal was scored by Kokorin and the tie goal was scored by Slimani. Belgium will face USA in the Round of 16 while the stage is set for a great match between Algeria and Germany.

MUST READ (WORLD CUP HISTORY): It was speculated by FIFA in World Cup 1982 that Austria and Germany made a pact in the last match of the group stage to draw in order for both of them to qualify denying Algeria any chances of qualifying. The FIFA speculations led to the decision of playing the last match in the group stage at the same time starting World Cup 1986. Austria is nowhere to be found on the World Cup scene recently and so Algeria will look to take revenge from the Germans. This is the first time Algeria reaches the Round of 16. It is also worth noting that Algeria defeated Germany in their group match in 1982 and this is the first time they go head to head since then.
