World Cup Day 11: The German Curse

Match day two stage comes to an end with a late Belgian qualifier against Russia, an Asian/African thriller in favor of the Algerians and a ruined breathtaking American comeback with a Varela equalizer.

GROUP H

BELGIUM 1-0 RUSSIA

An anticipated match between two European teams with the odds in their favor to qualify from Group H. The entertainment was on the lowest level as Belgium and Russia played a safe game for most of the 90 minutes. Belgium's Hazard awakened in the last 10 minutes and created a chance after chance until he set up Origi to score a late winner.

ALGERIA 4-2 KOREA REPUBLIC

Both teams turned and showed a wholly different face from their first matches. Algeria turned on the attacking engines scoring three early goals by Slimani, Hallichi and Djabou. Korea on the other hand had no idea what was going on but soon recovered and took one back by H M Son. After the hour mark, Brahimi sealed the match fate scoring a team goal. The match continued with several attacks for the Asians. They managed to score a second goal by J C Koo.

Algeria qualification scenarios:

1)      Win over Russia regardless of the other match result

2)      Draw with Russia provided Korea Republic loses or draws against Belgium or wins with a goal difference similar or less than that of Algeria loss.

Korea qualification scenarios:

1)      If Russia defeats Algeria, Korea has to have higher goal difference in their win

2)      If Russia and Algeria draw, Korea needs to win with more than three goals difference

GROUP G

PORTUGAL 2-2 USA

The last match of the day delivered entertainment, stress, goals, injuries and a ruined comeback. USA defender Cameron assisted Nani by mistake in scoring the first goal at minute 5. The remaining of the first half was all about USA trying to take a goal back and about a horrible player called Nani who was never able to neither receive any ball properly nor fulfill his duties as a right wing. The second half took off where things stopped at the half time whistle. At minute 64 after a cleared corner kick cross, USA Jones braced the ball leaving Beto stunned with the net vibrating behind him. Dempsey put the American ahead with nine minutes left on the match time. USA was only one minute short from booking their ticket to the round of 16 when Varela headed a Ronaldo perfect cross past Howard. The goal keeps Portugal's chances alive as well as Ghana's.

All teams in this group have the chance to qualify at this point. Germany and USA with four points, Portugal and Ghana with one point each. A draw between Germany and USA gets both teams to the round of 16.
