World Cup Day 5: The German Machine

Day 5 began with the German machine demolishing the Portuguese ships with four goals and 2 injuries. The second match in Group E recorded the first draw in the current World Cup between Nigeria & Iran. USA kicked off their World Cup journey with an important win against Ghana before facing Germany and a broken Portuguese team.

Matthew Lewis

GERMANY 4-0 PORTUGAL

Ronaldo & Co looked like they were going to put on a great display in the opening minutes but the whole match was an example on how an individual could ruin a whole team. Pereira pulled down Gotze 11 minutes into the match inside the box winning a penalty kick for Germany. Mueller converted the penalty and 20 minutes later Hummels scored Germany's second goal. Mueller joined the other top goal scorers in the competition right before half time. In the second half Portugal were just playing to finish off the match without further injuries. Germany on the other hand and specifically Mueller wanted that goal scorer leading spot and got what he wanted 12 minutes before the final whistle celebrating the 2014 World Cup first Hat-trick.

NIGERIA 0-0 IRAN

A scoreless match with minimum chances and much play in the middle. Nigeria looked like they wanted it more realizing they still have Argentina & Bosnia to worry about while Iran were happy with the draw enjoying their time at Brazil.

USA 2-1 GHANA

The United States beat Ghana tonight in a hotly contested battle 2-1 in a jungle atmosphere with intense humidity. Billed here in the states as a grudge match, Ghana had seen the Yanks out of the tournament in 2006 and 2010. Clint Dempsey scored 34 seconds into the match, the second quickest in history, and Team USA made it last until 8 minutes before stoppage, when Ghana bagged the equalizer on a shot by André Ayew.

Injuries to Jozy Altidore, Matt Besler and Alejandro Bedoya forced coach Jurgan Kilnsmann into substitutions, bringing in Aron Jóhannsson(23'), John mBrooks(45') and Graham Zusi(77') and while Jóhannsson failed to impress, Zusi to Brooks proved to be the winning combination on a set piece as a Brooks header off a corner form Zusi put the USA in front to stay.
