Fiorentina Statistics - End of 13/14 Serie A

Looking at the whole season numbers, was fourth place justified? or were the other teams that bad. In my humble opinion, qualification to the champions league was not stolen by a last minute wrong referee call but through injuries, uncalled for suspensions and a surprising Roma.

Gabriele Maltinti

The season is over and it is only fitting to look back and reflect on how well or bad the purple shirts did as a team and individually in the numbers game before the chaos of the World Cup kicks in followed by the Mercato craze. Just one more time this season before we turn into James's of Melbourne and Nolans of Viola Nation talking about who the team needs and where to get them from, Let us crunch the numbers and take what they mean as a lesson for next season.

TEAM OFFENSIVE STATISTICS

Fiorentina played 38 matches this season and it goes without saying how high and low it was on different periods of the season. Adding it all up, the following rankings among other Serie A teams were achieved.

Shots per game statistic ranking at fourth is probably fitting to the overall league fourth finish in Serie A and is an indication of the ability in converting possession into shots. Shots on target on the other hand is where the lesson lies, being 7th is 3 ranks lower than where the team should be. This is either a problem that needs to be looked into the next season, or the lack of real strikers for half of the season carries all the weight.

Thanks to Cuadrado Ultimately, Fiorentina are placed third in dribbles per game. It is never obvious how this stat factors in any team's play as one should calculate the goal percentage resulting from such dribbles. In Fiorentina's case, I believe it was a huge factor as i remember many goals that started with a dribble here or there. Ranking high in dribbles is a cause for being fouled; Fiorentina stands at the top of this stat along with Livorno.

Passing is what the game comes down to at the end of the day; Correct passes end up in dangerous chances for you but wrong passes convert the play dangerously against you. Fiorentina ranks third in this category behind first Roma and second Juventus at a very convincing 85.8% success in passing over 38 matches in Serie A. Before Matri showed up, i believe this one was always averaged below 1 as almost none of Fiorentina players were offside during a through ball and often called wrongly offside.

The passing game of Fiorentina could be the best there is in Serie A as they are ranked in the top four in each long, short and through passes per game.

TEAM DEFENSIVE STATISTICS

Fiorentina sit in the better half of the table at the end of the season in terms of shots conceded per game. Tackling was one of the things Fiorentina obviously lacked throughout the season and that puts them second to last at 18.6 tackles per game

Someone could argue that failing in tackles would rank Fiorentina high in fouls committed per game but not surprisingly, Fiorentina are ranked first and that can be attributed to Montella's style of play. It may not be favored by many in the world of football but Purples have not been game flow busters even when their tackles were not up to par. Fiorentina's score in interceptions is almost the average of all Serie A teams and ranks them mid-table with 14.8 interceptions per game
