Viola Overview & Statistics - Week 28

New, comments

The final week of Valero Expensive suspension. The first week of Rossi's final rehabilitation stage. Ten matches to go in Serie A. Coppa Italia Final. A possible Quarterfinals purple appearance.

Paolo Bruno

Restart button was hit as Fiorentina join the other top five teams in winning ways. Juventus, Napoli, and Parmaneeded last minute winning strikes while Roma and Fiorentina had similar wins by having a two goals lead most of the match. Inter on the other hand was the only comfortable among the top six. Fiorentina reach 48 points and only Napoli stands between them and the 50s next weekend. It will be up to Montella and the players to reduce that 10 points margin to 7 points with ten matches until the end of the season. Domestically, Chievo match marks the end of Valero's suspension period. That three match suspension probably makes that the most expensive human-human touch on the planet. Anyone else feels like they are in the eye of the storm? This paragraph is so stressful and I did not mentioned Europa League return leg against Juve yet. Juve, Napoli then Milan makes three tough matches to be played in 7 days. Montella has to go all out against the first two and then play whoever is still alive against Milan. It is time to take a look at how that Chievo match affects Fiorentina statistics among Serie A teams.

TEAM OFFENSIVE STATISTICS

Fiorentina played against Chievo with lots of possession but less out of bounds shooting compared to many other matches for the purple outfit. No changes in ranking for La Viola while Milan jumps over Juventus to take the lead in this stat at 16.8 shot per game

Fiorentina managed to get 50% of their shots on target which is a huge improvement to all season percentages. The team was able to put 5 shots out 10 on target against Chievo. No change in ranking nor average on this one. Juventus at the top with 6.3 shots on target

Udinese were able to catch up and take over Fiorentina's ranking with 11.3 dribbles per game in a tough match against Roma. Although Cuadrado featured heavily in the match against Chievo, Fiorentina go down a rank but remain with the same average third to leader Inter with 14 dribbles per game.

Losing a rank in fouls per game baffled me as Chievo committed 25 fouls against Fiorentina in the weekend tie. The rank was lost to Sassuolo who were fouled 24 times against Catania. So it looks like the source has a minor error there.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS

In this section, only players who make the top 5 or worst 5 depending on the type of stat discussed will be mentioned here.

POSITIVE STATS

Higuain important Napoli goal in the last fixture ties him up with Rossi. Both players are currently behind Tevez who has a 1 goal lead. If Rossi's return is becoming closer and no player is willing to break away from the pack of top goal scorers then Giuseppe might have the chance to win it. Players who played all 28 fixtures list is reduced to 13 entries; Neto is one of them. Valero is one of six players ranked 4th in most assists of Serie A. Mati Fernandez injury keeps him at 93.5% pass success rate ahead of Milan's De Jong with 92.0% while Pizarro continues to demonstrate his passing abilities to remain in 7th. Savic also did not feature against Chievo and so his average Aerial duels won and Interceptions per game remain the same at 4 and 3.2 respectively which keeps him third for aerial duels won but is overcome in interceptions by Mustafi and Manfredini to fourth. Cuadrado dribbled less against Chievo and was more effective in my opinion and retains the top spot in dribbles per game average at 3.9.

Man of The Match Juan Cuadrado

The Columbian beast, Vespa. The season is nearing its end and Cuadrado had marked his presence strongly in all competitions scoring important goals in Europa League group stage, Coppa Italia important safety goal against Udinese in the second leg of the semi-finals and increased his Serie A tally to five goals in the last match against Chievo to tie up second place with Valero behind top goal scorer Giuseppe Rossi. Cuadrado's skills may be needed in the following weeks more than ever to break opponents' defenses the same beautiful way he did with Pizarro against Chievo scoring the first goal of the match and making it easier to win. Cuadrado is currently the best dribbler in Serie A after 28 matches at 3.9 dribbles per game ahead of Inter's Ricky Alvarez at 3.2.

Cuadrado was born in May 1988. His birthday will be 8 days after the last match in Serie A. Like yours truly, he probably made the same challenge "Cake in the Face" with his teammates if they qualify for the Champions League but then again he probably did not because it is obvious that if Fiorentina are going to let anyone go or cash in on anyone, Cuadrado is first choice.

Cuadrado started his career in Columbia and made his first division appearance in 2008 with Medellen before signing for Udinese in the summer of 2009. Two years in Udinese did not do him justice as he was benched most of the time and so was loaned to Lecce in summer 2011 becoming just like this season the best dribbler but saw his team being relegated to Serie B. He returned to Udinese only to complete a loan move to Fiorentina with an option to buy half of the player and the right to play him. Cuadrado played an important part in Fiorentina's revival to finish fourth in Serie A. Fiorentina management took the option to co-own him with Udinese with no hesitation.

Vespa is now being linked with top tier European clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munchen. Also Juventus are hovering over Udinese to steal his half. As if this March 2014 battle between Fiorentina and Juventus was not enough to satisfy both ends, expect a more heated media battle to take place this coming summer especially if Cuadrado shines in the World Cup then maybe the Spaniards Barcelona and Real Madrid will want to join in on the race.

Cuadrado has shown loyalty to Fiorentina on numerous occasions in many interviews. Only summer will tell if he is one of them loyal Fiorentina Legends or just a passing through Joaggio who at the end can only be respected for his love for Florence.
