The draw, it wasn't nice to Fiorentina, handing us Tottenham, one of the worst possible opponents in the first knockout round of Europa League. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine the Spurs being too happy about it either. It is certain that we're in for an exciting duel, between the two teams that are among the strongest in the competition.
The first leg is scheduled for February 19, and the second is a week later. As a winner of its group, Fiorentina gets to play the return leg at home, which is sort of a good thing, but then again, we are better away this season.
Tottenham was second in their Europa League group, behind Besiktas, with 11 points. They are currently seventh in Premier League, with 24 points, just four away from the Champions League spot. They are trying to play an attacking, possession based football, but it's not really working out perfectly yet. So, there are quite a few similarities between the Spurs and Fiorentina, and it should guarantee open, exciting games in both legs.
The two teams never met in competitive games, but there was a friendly game in 2010, while Cesare Prandelli was still Fiorentina coach, that Tottenham won 3-2. Hopefully, it will be different this time.
