Missing You; Cagliari 2-1 Fiorentina

Fiorentina showed how much Borja Valero means to this squad with another disappointing loss away.

Claudio Villa

Fiorentina went on the road again, after a long International break and once again failed to impress, losing to Cagliari 2-1 in a match that wasn't really even that close.

La Viola, missing Borja Valero due to yellow card accumulation also lost Stevan Jovetic to injury at the half hour mark. Jovetic's status for next week remains to be seen.

Once again defensive lapses proved to be Fiorentina's undoing as time and time again the back line got caught forward and twice was made to pay with strong Cagliari counters.

Fiorentina remain in fourth place, as Inter lost to Juventus. However, Lazio's comeback win over Catania brings them within 1 pt in the standings.

Fiorentina will come back to Stadio Artemio Franchi to face AC Milan next week.

Report Cards

Viviano(6.5) - had no chance at all on either goal, both were solely the fault of the defense. made two of his three saves late to keep the match in reach
Roncaglia(5) - had a few decent crosses, but played way far too forward and coudln't get back on Cagliari's counters. He wasn't the worst out there today, but he was no where near good enough
Rodriguez(4) - Nowhere to be seen on either goal, completely out of posistion for most of the match, got a stupid yellow card to make himself unavailable for Milan.
Savic(4.5) - completely out of position on both goals, constantly unable to get back. he did play two full matches over the break, so fatiue could've been a factor.
Pasqual(5.5) - got the assist on the lone goal, had another good cross which Migliaccio headed over the net, looked better than most of the rest of the squad, but still had a poor crossing day (2 successful crosses out of TWENTY attempts). He really looked like he missed Valero
Aquilani(5) - along with the rest of the midfield, just looked lost. had a chance to tie it up late and skyed the free kick about 20 feet too high. I think he missed Valero as well.
Pizarro(5) - Perhaps he missed Borja most of all, completely didn't look like the same player out there. gave the ball away multiple times, one leading directly to the penalty which wound up being the deciding goal. Will need him to play much better going forward.
Migliaccio(5) - missed a good chance early with a bad header, never really was much of a factor after that. Subbed for Fernandez ; fernandez(6)- came in and made an immediate difference. earned two or three free kicks deep in Cagliari's zone, had a beautiful cross to Larrando late that would have tied the match but for the Sardinian Goalie's save.
Cuadrado(6) - Got the lone goal, held his own on his side, as always, but looked a step slow, not surprising considering his South America International Break.
Jovetic(4) - never a factor, came out after a half an hour holding his thigh. Subbed for Larrondo; Larrondo(5) -Had one chance late that he got on net, but the goalie made a fine save. otherwise no impact whatsoever, of course the midfield didn't do him many favors.
Ljajic(4) - every ball he touched early turned into a Cagliari counter. had one good run. other than that one run he was no factor. subbed at the half for toni. ; Toni(4) - made no contribution what so ever. nothing, zero, zilch.

Montella(5)- Once again the team goes on the road and lays an egg, once again the team comes off a break and not only loses, but looks hopeless, hapless and unaware of what's going on around them. of the three subs, only Fernandez seemed to have any impact at all. Cannot have these kind of lapses if you want to finish in the top of the league. Hopefully he can use the sting of this loss as motivation for next week.

Quotes

Montella:

“Our tempo was too slow in the first half and our two mistakes allowed Cagliari to break the deadlock. With a little more luck, we could’ve earned a draw that would have been deserved.”
